My first step on this journey, right from the outset really has been to just write down everything I know about what it is I want to write.
Some of that has been quite farfetched (like the fact that I think it could be a four book series when I haven’t even started one yet), whilst others have been pretty obvious.
It started out as a load of random notes made on my phone early one morning, but I’ve slowly been trying to type those up and categorise them a bit in order to make sense of it.
Most of the initial notes centred around this around characters and plot, but I’ve now started to expand on this.
What I’ve found particularly interesting during this time is that for some reason I had always assumed that stories started out fully formed and that authors had a really clear picture of how that would play out right at the start. Now that may be the case for some, but for me it has felt like a much more fluid process so far.
I do have a clear idea of the plot certainly, but what I initially thought was one primary character has since morphed into two, and my repository of everything I know seems to be constantly changing on a daily basis.
I’m finding that at any time of day a new idea will pop into my head that builds on the notes I’ve already made, so much so that I’ve had to pull up at the roadside at least once to write down a good idea before I forget it!
Very much enjoying the idea generation side of things at this stage and trying to make sense of all this randomness spewing out of my brain. In some ways I’m actively trying not to spend too much time deliberately putting the story together, as coming back to it little and often when I’m walking or driving somewhere has been quite beneficial so far.
